Our Achievements

Family Planning

FHOK is the pioneer of family planning movement in Kenya and was involved in the advocacy for the creation of the National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development (NCAPD) formerly National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) in 1982 and the development of the population policy in 1984.   FHOK contributes to the improvement of the health of all Kenyans particularly youth through provision of quality sexual and reproductive health information and services and according to the 1998 Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KDHS), 4.5% of the users of modern contraceptive methods received their supplies from FHOK facilities.

Community Based Distribution

FHOK with support from Path Finder International pioneered in the Community Based Distribution (CBD) method of contraceptive distribution way back in 1982.  The CBD approach has been adopted by various organizations in Kenya including the Ministry of Health, Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization, faith-based organizations and other Community Based Organisations.

Voluntary Surgical Contraception (VSC)

FHOK pioneered in provision of outpatient Bilateral Tubal Ligation (BTL) and Vasectomy Voluntary Surgical Contraception in addition to implants contraceptives. The Ministry of Health and many other organizations dealing with Reproductive Health later adopted this approach. FHOK has trained Doctors and nurses both from Kenya and other countries on Voluntary Surgical Contraception including implant insertion and removal, Bilateral Tubal  Ligation and Vasectomy.

Client Oriented Provider Efficiency (COPE)

In collaboration with Engender Health formerly AVSC, FHOK developed Client Oriented Provider Efficiency (COPE), a management tool, for quality improvement, that has been adopted by many other organizations in Eastern and Central Africa, including the Ministry of Health - Kenya.

Male Involvement

FHOK pioneered innovative strategies focusing on men as the target group. It set male-only clinics, trained workplace motivators to canvas their colleagues, referee them to the male-only clinic, motivated men to use condoms, and used puppetry in communicating sensitive Sexual and Reproductive Health messages. The project’s main message was “Men who care plan and protect their families”.

Advocacy on Reproductive Health Issues

FHOK has been at the fore front in advocating for gender equity and sexual and reproductive health rights for women particularly in eradication of Female Genital Mutilation and early marriage. In recognization to this FHOK received 2003 United Nations Population Award on institutional category for promoting the provision of sexual and reproductive health services within the context of reproductive rights and the empowerment of young people.

Certificate of Accreditation
The Governing Council of the International Planned Parenthood Federation awarded FHOK Certificate of Accreditation for being in full compliance with the constitutional, governance, programme and management provisions contained in the Standards and Responsibilities of IPPF Membership. This was approved on 13th May 2006.
